The cases examined in this brief essay demonstrate that not only Christianity but also Judaism have each independently developed, with regard to the episode of the ‘aqedah, a theological vision in which the redemption and salvation of a collective are achieved and secured through the sacrifice of a single individual. In Jewish tradition, already in the pre-rabbinic period, the idea that Israel's salvation was mediated by Abraham's obedience and by Isaac’s full consent to undergo at the hands of his father a sacrifice—though ultimately suspended—was part of the cultural currency. This sacrifice, despite being interrupted at the last moment, is portrayed as one of perfection and “integrity.” In the Christian interpretation, by contrast, salvation comes from Isaac’s antitype, Jesus Christ, whose crucifixion is prefigured by the ‘aqedah and constitutes both the fulfillment of the Old Testament typology and the realization of the will of God the Father.
