The essay discusses the progressive definition of the language and of the formal structures for the genre we now define as Provençal lyric poetry. Initially it embraced different vernacular languages and poetic genres for a variety of cultural milieux, but later a progressive process of selection took place. It appears that the public Provençal poetry was addressed to contributed significantly to this process.
