The article presents the history of the relationship between the University of Bari and the Old Town, as it was triggered by Giorgio Otranto, Professor Emeritus of History of Early Christianity in this University. A visionary and enlightened man, with a strong charismatic personality and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, Giorgio Otranto was a forerunner in imagining a broad project for the development and enhancement of the historic center, a project in which the University could and should play a decisive role. In this way, he demonstrated that one of the objectives of the University is to establish a relationship with the territory, understanding its needs and proposing solutions for its development and growth. The project took shape in the early 1970s from the headquarters of the Institute of Ancient Christian Literature, in a side street leading to the Cathedral Square in the Old Town. It ended with the acquisition of the Santa Teresa dei Maschi complex, which he strongly supported. Today this complex is one of the jewels in the crown of the University of Bari’s buildings.
