The essay compares the development of Western European left parties between 1945 and the early Sixties. It suggests that the parliamentary road to socialism and its previous requests for public ownership of banks and firms changed as the Welfare State developed and a social compromise emerged. The Welfare State became the symbol of socialism. The Italian development, in this perspective, was not quite different from other Western European countries but for the fight for social rights which was more radical and provided the Italian Communist Party with great appeal. The pursuit of social rights gradually split the Italian Socialist and Communist parties between a full democratic belonging and their internationalist ideology.

Abstract
The essay compares the development of Western European left parties between 1945 and the early Sixties. It suggests that the parliamentary road to socialism and its previous requests for public ownership of banks and firms changed as the Welfare State developed and a social compromise emerged. The Welfare State became the symbol of socialism. The Italian development, in this perspective, was not quite different from other Western European countries but for the fight for social rights which was more radical and provided the Italian Communist Party with great appeal. The pursuit of social rights gradually split the Italian Socialist and Communist parties between a full democratic belonging and their internationalist ideology.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
