La pittura funeraria

Canosan tombs provide tangible evidence of a pervasive use of colour, documented both by the lively polychromy of the ceramics and by the painted decoration of the tomb walls. The latter, however, is less easily outlined as its traces appear 'faded', due to the greater perishability of wall painting, but above all because of the fate that befell painted tombs in the long history of research that characterized the necropolis of this settlement. A history long marked by the rush to grab the finds and by the lack of attention to correct documentation and conservation of the structures and, even more so, of the mural paintings. A story that perhaps should be revisited, considering the development as a starting point to relaunch the knowledge of a formidable heritage, perhaps returnable, with renewed tools, to the eyes of modern observers, even when it is partially or totally lost. It is in fact evident how much there is still to be explored and implemented in the perspective of knowledge and valorisation, since there are quite a few possibilities that even the gaps, the ancient erasures, the modern damage can offer for the purpose of understanding and communicating to the public of different aspects, transforming the journey through the hypogea into an immersive experience with high information potential on several phases of the ancient history of Canosa.

Gli ipogei canosini hanno fornito una testimonianza tangibile di un uso pervasivo del colore, documentato sia dalla vivace policromia della ceramica sia dalla decorazione dipinta delle pareti. Quest’ultima, tuttavia, è meno facilmente tratteggiabile poiché le sue tracce appaiono ‘sbiadite’, a causa della maggiore deperibilità della pittura murale, ma soprattutto in conseguenza della sorte toccata alle tombe dipinte canosine nella lunga storia della ricerca che le ha contraddistinte. Una storia a lungo contrassegnata dalla corsa al recupero dei reperti e dalla mancata attenzione alla corretta documentazione e conservazione delle strutture e, ancor più, delle pitture. Una storia che è forse opportuno riannodare, considerandone la messa a punto quale punto di partenza per il rilancio della conoscenza di un patrimonio formidabile e forse anche restituibile, con rinnovati mezzi, agli occhi dell’osservatore moderno, anche quando esso sia parzialmente o totalmente perduto. È infatti evidente quanto ancora ci sia da esplorare ed attuare nella prospettiva della conoscenza e della valorizzazione, poiché non poche sono le possibilità che persino le lacune, le cancellature antiche, i danni moderni possono offrire al fine della comprensione e della comunicazione al pubblico di differenti aspetti, trasformando il percorso degli ipogei in una esperienza immersiva e ad alto potenziale informativo su più fasi della storia antica di Canosa.
