The concept of resilience, while useful heuristically, presents significant challenges in the social sciences, particularly in the sociological study of deviance, where both analytical and empirical foundations are often lacking. This paper critically reviews the theoretical compatibility of resilience suggesting its potential alignment with strain theories, notably Merton’s structural-functionalist framework and Agnew’s General Strain Theory, with the former emphasizing social structures and the latter incorporating a more psycho-social perspective. However, when examined through the lens of critical theory, which addresses power relations, social elites, and conflict-oriented perspectives on social dynamics, the concept of resilience becomes more contentious

Abstract
The concept of resilience, while useful heuristically, presents significant challenges in the social sciences, particularly in the sociological study of deviance, where both analytical and empirical foundations are often lacking. This paper critically reviews the theoretical compatibility of resilience suggesting its potential alignment with strain theories, notably Merton’s structural-functionalist framework and Agnew’s General Strain Theory, with the former emphasizing social structures and the latter incorporating a more psycho-social perspective. However, when examined through the lens of critical theory, which addresses power relations, social elites, and conflict-oriented perspectives on social dynamics, the concept of resilience becomes more contentiousFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
