The Time of Europe The process of European integration starts in the immediate postwar period, we have often focused on a narrative mainly aimed at reconstructing the stages it went through and the role of the political main characters who governed it - ideally or concretely - capturing its ideal and economic motivations. In fact, broadening the view, we find that this process is perfectly synchronous with the birth of perhaps the most advanced variant of democracy, which, not surprisingly, we can call precisely European democracy. The intertwined reading of the two events provides valuable insights into a reality that is too complex to be reduced to sector history, if not even celebration or mythopoiesis, allowing us to understand its successes as much as its crises. Today, more than ever, it is important to start here again, because there is no cure for the Union without a cure for European democracy and, quite simply, the loss of the patient is a damage we cannot afford, as Europeans, as democrats, as citizens of the world.

Il tempo dell’Europa Il processo di integrazione europeo parte nell’immediato dopoguerra, spesso ci si è concentrati su una narrazione volta prevalentemente a ricostruire le tappe percorse e il ruolo dei protagonisti politici che lo hanno governato – idealmente o concretamente – cogliendone le motivazioni ideali ed economiche. In realtà, allargando la visuale, ci accorgiamo che questo processo è perfettamente sincronico con la nascita della variante forse più avanzata di democrazia, che, non a caso, possiamo definire proprio democrazia europea. La lettura intrecciata delle due vicende fornisce spunti preziosi per la comprensione di una realtà che è troppo complessa per essere ridotta a storia di settore, se non addirittura a celebrazione o mitopoiesi, permettendo di comprenderne tanto i successi quanto le crisi. Oggi più che mai è importante ripartire da qui, perché non c’è cura per l’Unione senza cura per la democrazia europea e, molto semplicemente, la perdita del malato è un danno che non ci possiamo permettere, come europei, come democratici, come cittadini del mondo.
