The present volume is dedicated to La speranza come segno / Hope as a sign. Hope is a specific modality of human semiosis insofar as it is capable of metasemiosis (Thomas A. Sebeok). It is connected to the sense of time, of diachrony and is characterized by design and planning, by the “play of musement” (Charles S. Peirce), and by awareness of the human condition of insecuritas (Giuseppe Semerari). The human being is menaced structurally and permanently by one’s very own body, by nature, by others and also, if not above all, by self. Today we have the capacity to interact with all three inevitable sets of relationships to our unreversible detriment, today more than ever. Hope connected with insecuritas is a human sign, too human. It is the sign of the possibility we have at least to imagine, for musement, and of the wish to act for one’s good. No doubt, hope is at the basis of invention and of the practice of “techniques of reassurance” (science, politics, religion, etc.). Philosophical methodics (Ferruccio Rossi-Landi) inseparably from the science of signs, semiotics – in this case oriented specifically as semioethics – proposes to reflect on the latter, recovering their sense, in the sign of hope, precisely. These are some of the problematics and the perspectives that this particular volume in the annual series Athanor. Semiotica, filosofia, arte, Letteratura, intends to propose.

Abstract

This volume continues and develops the topics addressed in preceding volumes forming the annual series Athanor. Semiotica, Filosofia, Arte, Letteratura, directed by Augusto Ponzio, in a tradition that keeps account of present-day historical-social context and recent developments in the sign and language sciences. Earlier volumes in the Athanor series closely related to the present proposal include: Mondo di guerra [World of war], XVI, n. s., 9, 2005; Umano troppo disumano [Human too inhuman], XVIII, n. s., 11, 2007; La trappola mortale della identità [The mortal trap of identity], XX, 13, 2009; Incontri di parole [Encounter among words], XXI, 14, 2010-2011, Linguaggi del monoteismo e pace preventiva [Languages of monotheism and preventive peace], XXII, 15, 2012, Semioetica e comunicazione globale [Semioethics and global communication], XXIV, 17, 2014, Fedi, credenze, fanatismo [Faiths, beliefs, fanaticism], XXVI, 19, 2016; Pace, pacificazione, pacifismo e i loro linguaggi [Peace, pacification, pacifism and their languages], XXVII, 20, 2017, Identity and alterity, XXIX, 22, 2018; Diritti umani e diritti altrui [Human rights and the rights of others], XXX, 23, 2019-20, Maestri di segni e costruttori di pace [Masters of the sign and peacemakers], XXXI 24, 2021.
