The paper examines the question of Slav's settlement in ancient roman province of Dalmatia and the diffusion of latin and greek literacy among them. It discusses the origin of slavic writing traditions through glagolitic and cyrillic alphabets and their particular local issues. In this regard, a new hypothesis about the stages of local glagolitic and cyrillic writing types is proposed.
