This paper aims to analyse a neglected political dichotomy that emerges from the Life of Augustus written by Suetonius. It concerns two notions such as the ambitio, that is the desire to emerge in public life through the pursuit of popular gratia, and salubritas, a conceptualisation long explored only on a legal level or in relation to environmental interests. Actually, salubritas presents a rich and still unexplored semantic stratification, especially with respect to its political and institutional implications. The focus of the work is the identification of salubritas as a prerogative of the princeps and as a counterbalance to his personal ambitio.

Abstract
This paper aims to analyse a neglected political dichotomy that emerges from the Life of Augustus written by Suetonius. It concerns two notions such as the ambitio, that is the desire to emerge in public life through the pursuit of popular gratia, and salubritas, a conceptualisation long explored only on a legal level or in relation to environmental interests. Actually, salubritas presents a rich and still unexplored semantic stratification, especially with respect to its political and institutional implications. The focus of the work is the identification of salubritas as a prerogative of the princeps and as a counterbalance to his personal ambitio.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
