The essay aims to highlight some significant correspondences with Galileo’s style of thought in Francesco Lomonaco’s philosophical-literary production. The Lucanian Enlightenment felt the urgency of illustrating the ethical and civil “great book of the world” with the “same exactness of geometry”, with an ordered and mathematical alphabet in Galileo’s style, which included – in harmony with the picaresque sketch of the investigator of sounds present in Il Saggiatore – the principle of doubt and error. This dialectic – doubt/truth – is transferred by Lomonaco to the ground of morality in terms of ‘prudence’ and ‘action’. Further attesting to a Galilean theoretical substratum in Lomonaco’s thought is the direct association between the principle of ‘motion’ and the figure of Galileo, a mirror in which the Lucanian intellectual projected his own image. Lomonaco also reemployed Galileo’s rhetorical model for his own theoretical discourse: the rhetoric of the ego, the game of ‘masks’, and the attitude to laughter.
Il saggio intende rilevare nella produzione filosofico-letteraria di Francesco Lomonaco alcune significative corrispondenze con lo stile di pensiero del Galileo. L’illuminista lucano sentiva l’urgenza di illustrare il «grande libro del mondo» etico e civile con la «stessa esattezza della geometria», con un alfabeto galileianamente ordinato e matematico, che comprendeva – in sintonia col noto abbozzo picaresco dell’indagatore dei suoni presente nel Saggiatore – il principio del dubbio e dell’errore. Tale dialettica galileiana – dubbio/verità – è dal Lomonaco trasferita sul terreno della morale e declinata in termini di ‘prudenza’ e ‘azione’. Ad attestare ulteriormente il sostrato galileiano del pensiero del Lomonaco è la diretta associazione tra il principio di ‘moto’ e la figura dello scienziato pisano, specchio in cui l’intellettuale lucano proiettava la propria immagine. Lomonaco non mancava inoltre di reimpiegare in funzione del proprio discorso teorico il modello retorico della scrittura galileiana: la retorica dell’io, il gioco delle ‘maschere’, l’attitudine al riso.
