This paper deals with the so-called Instrumentum de stigmatibus (BHL 3135) that arose in 1282 from an official investigation to ascertain the precise day and time in which St. Francis received the stigmata on La Verna. The focus is on the close relationship between this short Latin document and the Considerazioni sulle stimmate, a Fourteenth-century vernacular text that, in its last section, is a largely literal translation of the former.

Abstract
This paper deals with the so-called Instrumentum de stigmatibus (BHL 3135) that arose in 1282 from an official investigation to ascertain the precise day and time in which St. Francis received the stigmata on La Verna.
