The aim of the present contribution is to explore a few cases of stereotyped views about the Indians in order to understand what the Graeco-Roman perceptions toward them was. India provided a rhetorical tool to be used in a variety of contexts (philosophy, religion, geography, politics and literature) where Graeco-Roman realities were compared to a utopian or paradoxical model.
