In recent years, research on translator training has recommended the design of innovative teaching methods, where the traditional class is abandoned in favour of more complex activities based on authentic projects that pose new challenges to teachers and learners so as to create the conditions for the “emergence” of a sound translation competence (Calzada Pérez 2019; XXXX 2023). This need for pedagogic innovation is deeply intertwined with the progress made in digital translation technology and is shared by many areas in the humanities under the impact of a digital revolution which seems to require a proper Digital Humanities pedagogy (Hirsch 2012). In the context of this need for teaching innovation, the pedagogical affordances offered by the very nature of Wikipedia as a complex multilingual digital ecosystem based on interaction and cooperation for the production and dissemination of knowledge cannot be underestimated, and almost naturally provides a playground for the experimentation of innovative training in line with the main tenets of Digital Humanities pedagogy (Kill 2012). Against this background, the present chapter reports on Wikipedia translation marathons carried out with students from a Master’s Degree in Specialized Translation at the University of Bari under the project labelled as Translatathon@Uniba. While aimed at contributing to the development of a comprehensive translation competence and a number of transversal soft skills, the project eventually proved to be an invaluable opportunity for trainee translators to take part - via translation - in the global dynamics of knowledge dissemination in a digital collaborative ecosystem.
