In Theoc. 2.62 scholars generally prefer Ahlwardt’s correction μάσσω to πάσσω, assuming that Simaetha commands her slave Thestylis to knead the bones of Delphis (τὰ Δέλφιδος ὀστία μάσσω). Nevertheless, on the basis of a thorough analysis of the context and the comparison with Theocritus’ epic model (Il. 22.440-441), it is possibile to retain πάσσω (“I smear the bones of Delphis”) and to shed light on a significant case of interpretatio Homerica.
