The first volume of the imposing biography dedicated to the figure and work of Benedetto Croce by Emanuele Cutinelli-Rendina (Turin, Aragno, 2022) is here discussed : in particular, the focus is on the profound and critical relationship established by Croce with historical materialism and the thought of Marx, also through the influence of Antonio Labriola. The genesis of Croce’s philosophical reflection, the first steps in the construction of a system of thought, the relationship with Gentile and the publishing initiatives promoted through the Laterza publisher complete the picture that goes all the way to the First World War.
