ABSTRACT. In sections 16 and 17 of the treatise Περὶ ἀλυπίαϲ, Galen deals, in particular, with the great loss of books suffered during the fire of AD 192 and refers twice to unspecified πίνακεϲ. These πίνακεϲ, although not always accurate, wielded significant authority in determining the authorship of older works: thus, scholars like Galen had to deal with the data provided by them, acknowledging their authoritative role.
