Abstract

Gilson’s earlier writings (Index scolastico-cartésien, 1913; La liberté chez Descartes et la théologie, 1913; Discours de la méthode. Texte et commentaire, 1925; Études sur le rôle de la pensée médiévale dans la formation du système cartésien, 1930) are characterised by a genealogical approach aimed at identifying the historical and philosophical links between Cartesian philosophy and the medieval scholastic thought. This contribution has two objectives: firstly, it aims at clarifying the nature, scope and significance of the aforementioned genealogical method developed by Gilson; secondly, it attempts to evaluate that method through the investigation of the historical genesis of the Cartesian notion of realitas obiectiva initiated by Gilson and continued by Roland Dalbiez.
