The present study dwells on the subject of angelic self-knowledge as treated by Duns Scotus in Ordinatio II, dist. 3, pars 2, q. 1. The study has two objectives. Firstly, it attempts to give an account of the debate that opposed Duns Scotus to Thomas Aquinas on a particular issue. Secondly, it seeks to show in what sense and in what way, discussing Thomas Aquinas’ thesis, Duns Scotus attempted to formulate a doctrine of the intellect capable of explaining knowledge and self-knowledge outside the traditional paradigm of passivity and reception.
