At the turn of the 19th century, Italian psychiatry was going through hard times. The idea that mentally insane patients posed a danger to society was widespread, thus leading to an overcrowding of asylums which, especially in Southern Italy, were already in short supply. In an attempt to remedy this unfortunate situation, new asylums were therefore established. Among the institutes founded during this period was the Casa della Divina Provvidenza in Bisceglie, on which this article will focus, shedding light on an important page in the psychiatric history of Southern Italy that has not yet been sufficiently investigated.

Abstract
At the turn of the 19th century, Italian psychiatry was going through hard times. The idea that mentally insane patients posed a danger to society was widespread, thus leading to an overcrowding of asylums which, especially in Southern Italy, were already in short supply. In an attempt to remedy this unfortunate situation, new asylums were therefore established. Among the institutes founded during this period was the Casa della Divina Provvidenza in Bisceglie, on which this article will focus, shedding light on an important page in the psychiatric history of Southern Italy that has not yet been sufficiently investigated.File in questo prodotto:
