The essay develops a reflection about the educational value of local history for the development of cognitive and socio-emotional learning, in order to the Agenda 2030, which indicates territorial identity in the sustainable development objectives, in order to activate a " behavioral learning”, the sense of responsibility and democratic participation in decision-making processes for the creation of inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable communities. Neverthless a historical itinerary is developed about the political and social aspects of fishing in the Piccolo sea in the Byzantine and Norman age. The perspective of historical investigation shows the plurality of belonging of individual communities in different contexts and environments, in past centuries. On the same time it is a way to identify the moments and the elements of current cultural identities. The last part presents the project called "Laboratory of eco-sustainable transition of Piccolo sea" for the development of transversal skills, which has involved research institutions, public and private, and third sector associations.
