In particular, the analysis of the reportage by Pierre Paget, entirely hinged as it is on the controversial figure of Luigi Alonzi, known as Chiavone, i.e. one of the most famous and controversial brigands of southern Italy, as well as one of the most direct interlocutors of the Bourbon court in Rome - a long article-interview published in «L'Illustration. Journal universel» on 11 January 1862, together with the two accompanying woodcuts, the work of engraver Ange-Louis Janet Lange from original daguerreotypes by photographer Alphonse Bernoud - is the epitome of the 'political' emptying of the figure of the brigand, from romantic hero to humorous character, because he had little political credibility and legitimacy.
La voce illustra il modo in cui generalmente la stampa illustrata d’Oltralpe ha interpretato la figura del brigante italiano nel secondo Ottocento, ricorrendo a strategie di scrittura e di organizzazione grafica capaci di avere un forte impatto sull’opinione pubblica nazionale. In particolare, l’analisi del reportage a firma di Pierre Paget, interamente imperniato com’è sulla figura controversa di Luigi Alonzi, detto Chiavone, vale a dire uno tra i più celebri e controversi briganti dell’Italia meridionale, oltre che uno dei più diretti interlocutori della corte borbonica a Roma – un lungo articolo-intervista pubblicato su «L’Illustration. Journal universel» l’11 gennaio 1862, insieme alle due xilografie che lo accompagnano, opera dell’incisore Ange-Louis Janet Lange a partire dai dagherrotipi originali del fotografo Alphonse Bernoud - si fa l’epitome dello svuotamento “politico” della figura del brigante, da eroe romantico a personaggio umoristico, perché dotato di scarsa credibilità e legittimità politica.
