The article addresses the issue of citizen participation in EU politics in the light of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFE). It outlines the lights and shadows of a unique transnational consultation combining bottom-up participatory features and top-down elitist decision-making mechanisms, questioning the success of what has been described as the largest experiment in pan-European democratic consultation.

Descrizione: L’Unione europea (e prima ancora la Comunità economica europea) è nata con un peccato originale: l’assenza di una solida legittimazione popolare. Il tema del c.d. deficit democratico europeo è di vasta portata ed è stato ampiamente arato dalla dottrina italiana e straniera, sempre attenta a valorizzare (o criticare) i graduali progressi compiuti nel tempo. In tale cornice si iscrive, ultima in ordine di tempo, la Conferenza sul futuro dell’Europa (di séguito CoFE).
