Did the ancient Greeks and Romans have ‘comic books’? This issue is addressed in the present paper, mainly on the basis of two papyrus fragments from the imperial age: they both display vignettes interspersed with portions of Greek text that contain the words spoken by the characters appearing in each vignette, who set up an agonal parodic contrast centred on the labours of Herakles.
