Mariangelo Accursio' s edition of the Res Gestae (Augsburg, 1533) was the first complete edition of the transmitted books of Ammianus Marcellinus' work. Accursio aimed to publish an emended text, freeing it from the errors of the manuscript tradition by also resorting to emendatio ope ingenii. By comparing evidence from the manuscript tradition with earlier and contemporary editions (especially that of Gelenius), this paper analyses some examples (Amm. 18.2.18; 20.11.6; 23.5.1; 28.3.4), in order to highlight that Accursius knew and understood the text of Ammianus' Res Gestae so well that he published an edition which was also satisfactory in terms of historical and military meaning and context.

Abstract
Mariangelo Accursio' s edition of the Res Gestae (Augsburg, 1533) was the first complete edition of the transmitted books of Ammianus Marcellinus' work. Accursio aimed to publish an emended text, freeing it from the errors of the manuscript tradition by also resorting to emendatio ope ingenii. By comparing evidence from the manuscript tradition with earlier and contemporary editions (especially that of Gelenius), this paper analyses some examples (Amm. 18.2.18; 20.11.6; 23.5.1; 28.3.4), in order to highlight that Accursius knew and understood the text of Ammianus' Res Gestae so well that he published an edition which was also satisfactory in terms of historical and military meaning and context.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
