Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that accounts for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), such as coronary artery disease with all its proteiform clinical syndromes, stroke and limb ischemia. Until now, several therapies have been applied to decrease the atherosclerotic risk: first of all the lifestyle interventions aimed at body weight reduction and improvement of insulin peripheral resistance, then the lowering of lipids and the platelets function modulation; in particular, the lowering of lipids (specifically the low-density lipoprotein fraction) is pursued either by drugs or plasmapheresis or even by monoclonal antibodies (evolocumab); while the antiplatelets modulation essentially by anti-inflammatory and -anti-platelet drugs.
