The present relation will be delivered jointly by the Director (Piero Totaro) and the Secretary (Giuseppe Genco) of the International Research and Study Center on Carnival Masks and Satire (CMS). It aims at offering a brief but accurate account of the salient steps of the life of the Center, since its official foundation (2015) up to current days, not neglecting to shed light on its flowering proto- history whose roots date back to ten years earlier than its formal constitution. This approach will allow to describe the Center and outline its various strategic goals (e.g. scientific research on Carnival traditions and rites of the Euro-Mediterranean area, as well as the territorial promo- tion of the city of Putignano and Apulia as a whole). This faithfully reflects the two leading activities of the Center, i.e. scientific research and enhancement of the extraordinary intangible heritage related to Carnival, the former being testified by the six biennial international conferences held so far (and more are yet to come), the latter by museum itineraries and good actions of social inclusivity – especially with regard to craftsmen (e.g., but not only, paper-makers), fans and (sometimes extravagant) experts of the feast. The pandemic, which so painfully locked up and split us apart, has significantly afflicted also the life of the Center as well as many other Carnival feasts, ending up with turning into an unavoidable break-point: which are the new goals, the instruments, the paths we are supposed to thread in the future? This is the greatest question we will have to answer.
