This study aims to present a preliminary discussion about the social position of slaves and freedmen during the Severan Age. The literary, juridical and epigraphic sources allow us to stress both the improvement of the living conditions of the slaves, and the attention of the emperors to keep the freedmen in check. However, despite some differences in the specific attitude of every single emperor, the work of the imperial freedmen in the administration will continue to play an important role during this phase too.
