This article aims at analyzing the perception and representation of childhood in Gregory the Great’s literary production. The search for significant references – starting from the terms infans and puer (in their different lexical forms) – doesn’t reveal any innovative feature in the Pope’s vision compared to the previous Christian tradition. In fact, he dedicates a marginal space to childhood in his exegetical and pastoral works, where it is mentioned only at a symbolic level and/or as an exemplum. Correspondingly, in Gregory’s hagiographic work, the Dialogi, even if/when some cases and events involving real children are narrated, childhood remains in the shadows: it is never the object of specific remarks, and its mention is entirely instrumental, in conveying the message of the narratio miraculorum.

Abstract
This article aims at analyzing the perception and representation of childhood in Gregory the Great’s literary production. The search for significant references – starting from the terms infans and puer (in their different lexical forms) – doesn’t reveal any innovative feature in the Pope’s vision compared to the previous Christian tradition. In fact, he dedicates a marginal space to childhood in his exegetical and pastoral works, where it is mentioned only at a symbolic level and/or as an exemplum. Correspondingly, in Gregory’s hagiographic work, the Dialogi, even if/when some cases and events involving real children are narrated, childhood remains in the shadows: it is never the object of specific remarks, and its mention is entirely instrumental, in conveying the message of the narratio miraculorum.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
