The article aims to investigate the meaning of Salvemini's work through a critical analysis of the concepts of culture and secularism, taken as interpretative criteria both of his specific educational theory and of his constant commitment in order to improve the school. Our attempt is to highlight the peculiarities of Salvemini’s lesson within the broader framework of the social, political and cultural panorama of the Kingdom of Italy between the end of the XIX century and the Giolittian Era.
