Following in the footsteps of a well-established historiographical tradition on the cult, sanctuaries and pilgrimages of St. Michael in Europe, the paper will analyse a particular case study involving the Michaelic tradition of the Gargano and the rivalry among several Norman abbeys between the 11th and 12th centuries: the Priory of Saint-Michel-du-Mont-Gargan, a dependency of Saint-Ouen of Rouen. After reconstructing the birth and growth of the Priory, the study will examine the history of Saint-Ouen in order to contextualise the role of the cult of the Archangel and the function of this minor institution within the strategy of religious policy pursued by the mother abbey in the years of the formation of the Norman Principality after the Viking invasions.

Abstract
Following in the footsteps of a well-established historiographical tradition on the cult, sanctuaries and pilgrimages of St. Michael in Europe, the paper will analyse a particular case study involving the Michaelic tradition of the Gargano and the rivalry among several Norman abbeys between the 11th and 12th centuries: the Priory of Saint-Michel-du-Mont-Gargan, a dependency of Saint-Ouen of Rouen. After reconstructing the birth and growth of the Priory, the study will examine the history of Saint-Ouen in order to contextualise the role of the cult of the Archangel and the function of this minor institution within the strategy of religious policy pursued by the mother abbey in the years of the formation of the Norman Principality after the Viking invasions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
