Firms play a crucial role in the transition process towards more sustainable systems thanks to their ability to develop eco-innovations. The purpose of this work is to shed light on the relationship between firm performance and different types of eco-innovation: product, process and organizational. The results show that the introduction of eco-innovations by European SMEs is positively associated with performance. Particularly, the relationship with process and organizational innovations seem to be stronger. It emerges, moreover, that manufacturing SMEs benefit more from eco-innovations, compared to SME in other sectors. The results provide guidance for policy makers about the design of effective environmental regulation that encourages firms to engage in the development of eco-innovation strategies.
