This paper examines the long-run relationship between fertility and women’s labor market activities in Italy by analyzing aggregated Total Fertility Rates (TFR) and Female Employment Rates (FER) during the period 1972-2011. The findings evidence a negative correlation between TFR and FER up to half of the nineties if country totals are considered, and up to 2004 if calculated taking into account regional rates. However, by studying Italian macro-areas the results show a positive relation in the Nord since 1977, and a negative one for the Center and the South.

Abstract
This paper examines the long-run relationship between fertility and women’s labor market activities in Italy by analyzing aggregated Total Fertility Rates (TFR) and Female Employment Rates (FER) during the period 1972-2011. The findings evidence a negative correlation between TFR and FER up to half of the nineties if country totals are considered, and up to 2004 if calculated taking into account regional rates. However, by studying Italian macro-areas the results show a positive relation in the Nord since 1977, and a negative one for the Center and the South.File in questo prodotto:
