The present research project focuses on decay phenomena, which interest Apulian (Southern Italy) decorative and construction carbonate rocks, after several accelerated ageing tests. The main research aims are the definition of experimental procedures and conditions to perform accelerated ageing tests and the identification of suitable techniques to investigate the effects of engendered decay. A further goal is the characterization, under simulated environmental conditions, of causes, processes and effects of decay phenomena, particularly on selected carbonate stone. Involved materials were several limestones and dolostones, extracted from various Apulian quarries, in particular: four varieties of compact limestone from Apricena and Trani basins, a moderately porous limestone from Trani, a porous limestone from Carovigno, a dolostone from Poggiorsini (belonging to Trani basin) and a calcarenite from Cursi-Melpignano quarry (belonging to Lecce basin). Selected samples were treated, using several experimental artificial ageing tests, simulating environmental conditions, which produced decay phenomena. The ageing consisted of: treatments of exposure to high temperature, thermal shocks, exposure to saline solutions and exposure to SO2 atmosphere. Before, during and after ageing tests, elaborated methodology was applied to check and measure every changes, in terms of mineralogical composition, physical properties and mechanical parameters, occurring on stones. To this aim, several analytical techniques and methods were applied, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS), image analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, ultrasound propagation velocity, Schmidt hammer and other tests to evaluate effects of artificial decay. Results suggested a different behaviour of groups of samples, mainly in virtue of their porosity, and a typical response to every induced ageing test. Moreover, experimental conditions and procedure to perform ageing tests were presented and their efficiency in reproduction of deterioration environments was validated.
