Abstract
The mythical etiology of Burgus — home of the illustrious and powerful Gallo-Ro- man Pontius Leontius, described by Sidonius Apollinaris in Carm. 22 — consti- tutes the most complex poetic description of an aristocratic residence that late Latin literature handed down to us. Being a successful «condensé de mythologie», where echoes of illustrious auc- tores and repetitions of ancient topoi intertwine in order to enhance the power and wealth of Pontius Leontius and present Burgus as the ideal villa (opulent, splendid and unassailable), the carmen is built on a perfect Verbindung of reality, myth, and eulogistic intent.File in questo prodotto:
