The paper deals with the evidence for the death of Kostantinos Simonidis, the notorious 19th century forger forger of ancient manuscripts. Simonidis’ death was announced for the first time in 1867 and this eventually became the accepted date: the origin of this information and its limited circulation are discussed in the paper. The news of his death circulated again in 1890, when it was reported widely in the press together with details previously unknown, including the mention of Simonidis’ first name as “Alcibiades”. The source of the spreading of the news was a curious, lengthy article, published on a Viennese newspaper, the «Neues Wiener Tagblatt», on September 25, 1890.
