Submarine internet cables play a fundamental role in the modern society. Indeed, experts assess that 98 percent of data and telephone traffic is transmitted by these underwater buildings. Moreover, submarine communications cables have an essential function for the national security of every State. However, these undersea buildings are vulnerable to a lot of natural and human threats. Furthermore, during an armed conflict, belligerents could damage submarine cables or exploit them to launch cyber-attacks against their enemy. These activities might influence the position of neutral states. This article analyses the international law with respect to submarine fiber optic cables. It concludes that the current legal regime for their protection is inadequate.

Abstract
Submarine internet cables play a fundamental role in the modern society. Indeed, experts assess that 98 percent of data and telephone traffic is transmitted by these underwater buildings. Moreover, submarine communications cables have an essential function for the national security of every State. However, these undersea buildings are vulnerable to a lot of natural and human threats. Furthermore, during an armed conflict, belligerents could damage submarine cables or exploit them to launch cyber-attacks against their enemy. These activities might influence the position of neutral states. This article analyses the international law with respect to submarine fiber optic cables. It concludes that the current legal regime for their protection is inadequate.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
