The paper focuses on the loanword sindemia, recently used to refer to Coronavirus disease (COVID–19). The analysis starts from the English word syndemic, which was coined by medical anthropologist Merrill Singer to identify a new public health concept, alongside epidemic, pandemic and endemic. The second part of the study investigates the use of sindemia for referring to COVID–19 in Italian media. The examination of examples from Italian medical journals finally demonstrates that sindemia was already used before 2020.

Abstract

The paper focuses on the loanword sindemia, recently used to refer to Coronavirus disease (COVID–19). The analysis starts from the English word syndemic, which was coined by medical anthropologist Merrill Singer to identify a new public health concept, alongside epidemic, pandemic and endemic. The second part of the study investigates the use of sindemia for referring to COVID–19 in Italian media. The examination of examples from Italian medical journals finally demonstrates that sindemia was already used before 2020.
