Lament constitutes a fundamental component of the elegy, and, not surprisingly, the reference to grief, caused by the pains of love and by labores that the lover has to endure to conquer the beloved woman, already appears in the programmatic elegy of the Propertian Monobiblos; from this moment on, the scenario that forms the background to the elegiac lament is characterized by recurring elements: the lonely nature, the hostility of the surrounding environment, the adversity of the sea, the absence of interlocutors, the fear and anxiety aroused from the treacherous scenarios of wars fought in unknown lands far from Rome; furthermore, through the landscape, Propertius defines with original features the different emotional gradations that the suffering of abandonment originates.
