Questo lavoro si inserisce in una linea di studi sull’ambito forse meno approfondito della storia delle biblioteche, quello relativo al pubblico e al servizio. L’archivio e i registri del servizio al pubblico della Biblioteca provinciale di Potenza permettono di ricostruire nei suoi vari aspetti la vita passata dell’istituzione, di conoscere i lettori nel dettaglio e di studiare le abitudini e le scelte di ognuno di loro, quindi allo stesso tempo di capire come usavano la biblioteca, perché la frequentavano e in alcuni casi perché si incontravano lì. In questa prima parte dello studio sulla biblioteca la scelta di analizzare principalmente i registri di lettura rispetto a quelli di prestito è dovuta alla loro maggiore potenzialità descrittiva del pubblico e delle sue letture – il numero di utenti, la cronologia della loro presenza, la qualità e quantità delle scelte – e perciò dell’ambiente della biblioteca che l’articolo intende delineare. Dal punto di vista cronologico, il periodo preso in esame per gli utenti va dal 1940 al 1943. This work is part of a line of studies on the perhaps less in-depth area of library history, which is related to the users and the library service. The archive and the library services’ registers of Potenza Province Library allow to reconstruct in its various aspects the past life of the institution, to know readers in detail and study habits and choices of each of them, then at the same time to understand how they used the library, why they went often to it and in some cases why they met there. In this first part of the study about the library, the choice to analyze mainly registers of readers instead of the borrowers’ ones is due to their greater descriptive potentiality of public and their readings – users’ number, the dates of their presence, quality and quantity of their choices – and therefore of the library environment the article intends to outline. From a chronological point of view, the period examined for users’ analysis goes from 1940 to 1943.
