This paper aims to provide a brief and updated reflection on the effective situation of language learning and teaching within EU, particularly in Italy and Germany, moving from some specific references to English. The paper will base itself both on the results of some international enquiries and on a comparative description of the contemporary Italian and German teaching contexts. An attempt will also be made to evaluate how and how much the Italian and the German educational systems pay attention to the specific CEF indications.

Abstract
