Eusapia Palladino (1854-1918) is remembered as one of the most famous mediums in the history of spiritualism. Numerous renowned scientists attended her séances, in Europe and the United States, and they often had to admit being unable to understand the origin of the phenomena produced. Cesare Lombroso, for example, after meeting Eusapia was converted first to mediumism, then spiritualism. The purpose of this article is to retrace the early stages, thus far little studied, of the career of the medium to shed light on the way in which she managed to bring herself to the attention of scientists and on why they chose her as an epistemic object.
