New discoveries, old hypotheses and new proposals resulting from recent surveys make it necessary to update the research on red-figure fish-plates, a specialized production, which appeared late, quickly standardized and was exported and imitated in a limited chronological period but with Mediterranean spread. Before starting a new research project, to be carried out at the University of Bari, I present in this paper the state of the art, together with some interpretative ideas on origin, denomination, meaning and function of this singular vase shape and its recurring decoration.
