Verso una zona economica esclusiva italiana

In June 2021 Italy adopted a law which should lead to establishing an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) beyond the outer limits of the territorial sea. In doing so, Italy decided to abandon its earlier stance not to extend sovereign rights and jurisdiction within the Mediterranean Sea for the sake of preserving the freedom of the sea. However, further steps are required to make the EEZ operative, including procedures aimed to determine the outer limits under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Coordination with the European Union is also needed with regard to matters falling in the Union’s competence
