The social issue of legality is increasingly gaining attention in the political and cultural debate as well as its impact on economic development. Several studies and research show how illegality can depend on the relationship between social and legal norms and that multiple factors can come into play. This contribution analyses that of relativity: that is, if and how individuals - in a context of economic crisis - justify and/or accept certain behaviors and show a propensity for illegality. Our results show the relevance of the cultural dimension of social norms as identity factors and the need for strategic paths in order to build a culture of legality, which is essential for the economic recovery.

Abstract

The social issue of legality is increasingly gaining attention in the political and cultural debate as well as its impact on economic development. Several studies and research show how illegality can depend on the relationship between social and legal norms and that multiple factors can come into play. This contribution analyses that of relativity: that is, if and how individuals - in a context of economic crisis - justify and/or accept certain behaviors and show a propensity for illegality. Our results show the relevance of the cultural dimension of social norms as identity factors and the need for strategic paths in order to build a culture of legality, which is essential for the economic recovery.
