The Southern Frontier. Images of the Other in Luigi Pirandello’s “Lontano”

Lars è un marinaio norvegese che, ammalatosi, sbarca sull’isola siciliana e finisce per sposare Venerina, la donna del posto – bruttina – che non voleva maritarsi con nessuno. Eppure lui, il forestiero che in terra straniera doveva ritrovare la luce e il benessere, la sposa e la rende madre; ma, una volta raggiunta la maternità, a Venerina di questo marinaio non gliene frega più niente. Tuccini mira a far comprendere – con un pretesto interculturale – in che modo Pirandello, in questa novella del 1902, abbia trattato il tema della diversità nel quotidiano, offrendo agli studiosi di imagologia l’occasione per un’indagine privilegiatissima.

What are the literary and philosophical themes that emerge from the Sicily at the heart of Pirandello’s novella “Lontano”? Through whose eyes are we intended to interpret the story? Lars is a Norwegian sailor who, following an illness, lands on the Sicilian coast and ends up marrying Venerina, a rather plain and homely local woman who has no intention of marrying anybody. Nevertheless, the newcomer who landed on this foreign shore in search of light, good health and well-being, marries her and fathers her child; yet, once she reaches motherhood, Venerina wants nothing more to do with this sailor. In these two essays, I aim – with an intercultural pretext – to shed light on how Pirandello, in this novella dated 1902, has handled the theme of diversity in everyday life, thus offering imagologists the opportunity to conduct a highly privileged investigation.
