In Los problemas fundamentales de la metafísica occidental Zubiri elaborates for the first time a comprehensive interpretation of Aristotle's ontology. Implicit in his early works (from Naturaleza, Historia, Dios to Sobre la esencia), the metaphysical problem becomes in this work the object of a direct investigation leading the Spanish philosopher to circumscribe the peculiar kind of knowledge that metaphysics presupposes and to identify the “diaphanous” as its object. This investigation allows us to put an emphasis on a) the transcendental nature of Zubiri's interpretation of metaphysics; b) the interpretation of the “diaphanous” as an essentially noetic principle; c) the far-reaching influence that scholastic philosophy and phenomenology have exerted, in different yet complementary ways, in the development of Zubiri's thought.
