Antonio Trombetta was an Italian Roman Catholic Bishop, member of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans), and Scotist philosopher. He taught metaphysics at Padua, first as regent of the Paduan school of metaphysics and later as holder of the public chair of metaphysics in via Scoti. His major works are the Opus doctrinae scoticae Patavii in thomistas discussum (Venice 1493), in which he investigates some of the most relevant topics of Aristotelian metaphysics; a Tractatus singularis contra Averroystas de animarum humanarum pluralitate ad catholice fidei obsequium (Venice 1498), in which he discusses the Averroistic doctrine of the unicity of the intellect, opposing the interpretation promoted in Padua by Nicoletto Vernia and Agostino Nifo; and, finally, a Tractatus formalitatum (Venice 1502), in which he reworks some outstanding items of the ontological vocabulary developed by John Duns Scotus and his early followers. He exerted a strong influence on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Scotism.
