sychological aspects in the choice of abortion method: comparison between RU-486 and surgery Background From April 1, 2010 if the conditions of women permit it, in Italy you can choose the abortion method, until the seventh week of gestation. The present study aims to investigate the personality traits that guide the pregnant woman in the choice between traditional surgery and abortion pills. Method 80 women who started the procedure of abortion have been placed into two groups based on the abortion method chosen. Both groups were subjected to a questionnaire concerning demographics, the reasons of abortion and perceived social support; two psychological scales for the detection of anxiety and depression, and a personality questionnaire. Results Demographics data do not affect the choice of abortion method, except for the number of children. In fact, women who opt for RU-486 are mostly primiparous, differently to those who undergo surgery. In addition, the perceived social support and greater stability in the emotional relationship with their partner is significantly related to the choice of drug interruption. The group of women who choose to break through pill has significantly higher levels of “openness” and lower values in psychopathological scale, while the sample opting for surgical abortion have higher values of anxiety and depression. Discussion Medical abortion requires the active involvement of woman, her direct responsibility, a perfect understanding of the medical instructions, the ability to cope with emergency. For these reasons, this pregnancy termination procedure is especially chosen by women, mostly first-time mothers, which exhibit some specific characteristics: more active personality, lower levels of anxiety and depression, higher levels of emotional support perceived, in particular by the partner.
