The use of frozen semen for artificial insemination of the mare is strongly limited by the peculiar reproductive activity of this species, the difficulty to obtain large amounts of semen from each stallions, the variability in the cryopreservation procedures, the low viability of sperm in the uterus and variable pregnancy rate from different stallions. In the present work, we report the results of the use of frozen equine semen in four consecutive reproductive seasons. Data indicates that it is possible to obtain pregnancy rates similar to those that can be obtained with fresh or cooled semen. This can be obtained when heat and ovulation are stressly monitored, semen is well manipulated and females are correctly selected.
